Novell Connects World Leaders at the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos

Davos, Switzerland -- January 28, 1998 -- Novell, Inc. will provide and deliver technical support for a full-service messaging and Internet information solution available to all 2,000 delegates gathering here, January 29, for the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum.

Novell's customized messaging solution -- an easy-to-use e-mail and Internet application -- is based upon GroupWise 5, the market leading client/server communications product which combines groupware and work-processing capabilities with e-mail and integrates the latest Internet/intranet technologies.

The 1998 Annual meeting will bring the world's leading business people, politicians and academics to Davos to hold discussions and create policy recommendations based on the theme Priorities for the 21st Century. Novell chairman and CEO Dr. Eric Schmidt will join the high tech leaders participating in panel sessions on how the benefits of technology can be harnessed to improve human life everywhere on earth.

"We consider the Annual Meeting to be an excellent opportunity to showcase and explain Internet-based technologies to some of the world's most important decision makers," said Dr. Schmidt. "At Novell, we believe networks will continue to have a profound impact on every aspect of world business, government, and education. Our partnership with the World Economic Forum allows us to give a hands-on demonstration of the technology that's making the world smaller and the economic future brighter for people everywhere."

World figures participating in the Annual Meeting include UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, banker George Soros and Archbishop Desmond Tutu from South Africa, as well as an impressive line up of presidents, prime ministers and representatives from international bodies. In addition to Dr. Schmidt, high-tech innovators expected to attend the meeting include Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, and Xerox Palo Alto Research Center chief scientist and director John Seely Brown.

Worldwide Messaging

The messaging solution is integrated with Novell's GroupWise 5 running on a Novell intraNetWare server. Fully scalable, it uses the industry-standard TCP/IP protocol to communicate between workstations and servers, offers multiple e-mail gateways and supports all major Internet browsers. This ensures that in addition to sending and receiving messages, delegates can also access stored information for details about fellow delegates and the countries and the companies that they represent.

In response to the requirements of world leaders, Novell has designed its information solution to ensure ease of use and a high degree of security. For example:

By using this messaging system, accessed through terminals in the Novell Internet Business Centre and at strategic locations in the Congress Centre and major hotels, delegates can communicate with colleagues and can also enjoy fast and secure access to the World Wide Web via ISDN lines.

During the 1997 Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum, Novell's messaging system handled some 18,000 messages, and this year Novell technicians expect this high level of traffic to increase substantially as Internet know-how continues to permeate the top levels of business and politics.
