Embarrassment at COMDEX: Gates shows off Windows 98, BUT it crashed

Microsoft Chairman and CEO Bill Gates, with help from a company product manager, was deep into a demonstration here this morning of the soon-to-be-released new operating system Windows 98 when the huge monitors on either side of the stage flashed the message that the operating system had crashed.

"Whoa," said Chris Capossela, product manager, as he quickly clicked the mouse to take the message off the screen and Gates joked, "This must be why we're not shipping Windows 98 yet."
