Novell to Integrate Entrust's Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) with NDS and NetWare 5
Novell(R) and Entrust(R) Technologies Collaborate on Security Integration to Simplify User Access and Reduce Administrative Costs
Novell to Integrate Entrust's Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) with NDS and NetWare 5 and Provide Users with Single Sign-on to Networks
PROVO, Utah -- July 27, 1998 -- Novell(R), Inc. and Entrust(R) Technologies Inc. today announced a strategic agreement to combine their respective technologies to provide network users with single sign-on for NDS, Entrust's PKI (public key infrastructure) software and Entrust-Ready(TM) applications.
With the agreement, Entrust PKI(TM) will be integrated with Novell's directory services technology, NDS(TM), and then bundled with NetWare(R) 5. The combination of industry-standard LDAP v.3 integration and the port of Entrust/Alliance PKI to NetWare will simplify network authentication for users, reduce redundancy in network administration and lower the total cost of ownership for secure networking applications.
Upon completion of the product integration, expected in early 1999, a 100-user evaluation copy of Entrust/Alliance PKI for NetWare will be bundled with NetWare 5. After the 90-day evaluation period, customers will have the option to purchase licenses for Entrust/Alliance PKI for NetWare from Entrust.
Novell plans to distribute the combined products through its standard channels and plans to make other networking applications, such as Novell's GroupWise messaging solution, Entrust-Ready(TM).
"Traditionally single sign-on solutions have been very difficult for ISVs to develop and for customers to implement," said Christopher Stone, Novell senior vice president of strategy and corporate development.
"But with the delivery of key NDS enhancements and four APIs, Entrust, a leading PKI provider, and others are able to provide customers with a single sign-on for their applications to simplify user access and reduce application administration costs."
"Entrust Technologies allows organizations to establish a comprehensive, PKI-based security solution to improve their business practices by instituting high levels of security," said John Ryan, Entrust Technologies president and chief executive officer. "This announcement is a great endorsement for Entrust and we look forward to working with Novell in the future."
Single Sign-on
As a part of the integration of NDS and NetWare with Entrust PKI, applications have the ability to securely store and retrieve security information associated with a user's authenticated NDS connection. Customers will have access to the single sign-on solution, allowing a single login to be shared across Entrust-Ready applications to save time and increase user productivity.
Once the solution is in place, the user need only log into NDS because Novell's secret store encrypts and stores the user authentication files so that the user need not supply it to the application again. In addition, because NDS is distributed rather than server-centric, Entrust users gain the ability to log in from any location on the network.
Entrust/Alliance PKI for NetWare Integration
Today, through the LDAP protocol, businesses can store end-user certificates issued by Entrust's enterprise PKI solutions on NT Server and UNIX in Novell's NDS (out of the box and without modification). This allows NetWare 5 users to store and retrieve their certificates while network administrators manage them through Entrust's administrative software.
The agreement between Novell and Entrust increases this level of integration by allowing Entrust/Alliance PKI for NetWare, a complete PKI based on fourth generation technology, to run natively on NetWare 5.
Additionally, Entrust PKI software will be integrated with NDS to further eliminate redundant user accounts in the network, thus making network management and administration more efficient.

Pricing and Availability
Single sign-on capabilities and a version of Entrust/Alliance PKI for NetWare are expected to be commercially available in early 1999. NetWare 5 users will receive a free trial of Entrust/Alliance PKI for NetWare for 90-days, after which licenses can be purchased from Entrust.
Prices for the licenses are to be determined.
