- Keynote: The Victorian Government Rosetta Program
by Andrew Rook, Novell Technology Specialist
Rosetta is the IT infrastructure supporting government. It's a powerful directory service that provides accurate information on people across the whole of Victorian Government (WoVG).
Rosetta is a leading example of integration of electronic directory services, with no other government in Australia conducting a project of similar scope or complexity. Rosetta has produced significant gains in security, efficiency and effectiveness on the previous directory infrastructures.
By creating a core infrastructure across all departments, the Victorian Government can now concentrate on eGovernment projects at both the departmental and WoVG level. Rosetta is helping to deliver the Victorian Government's Connecting Victoria policy as well as other strategic government ICT projects, such as TPAMS and Victoria Online.
With the infrastructure in place, the Victorian Government is looking to expand Rosetta to encompass other key business applications. Rosetta has been operational since September 2006.
Project Rosetta is named after one of the world's most famous catalysts for translating information.
The ancient Rosetta stone, discovered in the late 18th century, allowed linguists to finally decipher the meaning of Egyptian hieroglyphics. Currently, directories across government have been established using different languages (applications or structures) and technologies. Like the Rosetta stone, this project is working with information (directories or lists) whose true value is largely hidden.
Project Rosetta promises to allow the Victorian Government to unlock the capability of these directories, extend their functionality and help to deliver valuable connection between government, business and citizens.
Come along and learn about how it was done from someone who was directly involved.
The Victorian Government's web page for this project is here.
Novell have also provided a short marketing video on this topic:
