MNUG's July 1998 Q&A Transcript |

Q. Groupwise 5.2 unpatched. A message to the effect that a proccess in the MTA or the MTA itself was corrupt (the internal one). Then the server crashed. Original message on source server, corrupt copy on the destination server. Each time the corrupt copy on the destination server was deleted, GroupWise would recopy the message with the predictable result of crashing the server again.
A. Solution was to ensure that the message was deleted at both ends. Novell advised patching as well.
Q. Is there any way to see the header in a GrouWise message. This would facilitate finding the sender of the message and determining what was sent in the first place.
A. Novell indicated that Groupwise security features are such that you cannot see any part of the message including the headers.
Q. Is it possible to define more than one parallel printer with NPrinter 95? No doco indicates that you can't, but doesn't show you how to do it. (note: Not running nprinter.exe as this is not the thing to do under 95) Running Intranetware client 2.2.
A. Suggestion to trouble shoot the hardware first (ie LAN card on IRQ 5 and LPT2 as well?), but anectodal evidence shows that it may not be possible after all.
A. Another suggestion was HP Print Node (though may be cost intensive) and or run printer in serial mode.
Note: look at special edition of last year's *.MNU about NPTWIN95 for more info.
Q. Want to install a replica onto a machine and NDS Manager wont allow it. All boxes are 4.11, fully patched. Error message is "CANT SET BINDERY CONTEXT". A reinstall of the server won't fix problem. Database is fully synchronised, logged in as Admin, no IRF's, 512Mb RAM, 9 Gb space free. Using IntranetWare Support Pack 5b.
A. Perhaps an incedent should be logged with Novell.
Note: As servers are named Scully and Mulder, it could be another Xfile !!! :-)
Q. Groupwise 5.2.3, two post offices in 1 domain, intention was to move one of the post offices to another domain which is not possible. So new post office created in target domain and few users were moved and checked. All the users were then moved. Now the problem. 300,000 messages are being moved. Messages were not archived. Now the machines are just churning. Could be timeouts might be an issue.
A. Time factor for moving users is known parameter - it will simply take time! Novell suggested archiving in a big way. To stop current process, pull the plug and rollback.
Q. Environment contains both NT servers and Netware servers. Users are on NT with MS Gateway Servivces for Netware. Distributed File Services on the NT boxes, which includes the Gateway share. Users can create files but not directories in the target location.
A. Not a path length issue, & if users go directly to the gateway then there is no issue. Seems to be a DFS client issue. (this from MS)
Q. When are the Q&A sessions going to be posted...?
A. You're reading one right now... in future we will endeavour toget these up on line as soon as possible after the meeting.
Q. Is there a whitepaper on migrating users from NT WorkStation Manager for NT to ZEN Works?
A. Novell advised of a patch, as there are some issues with this. Patch name is NT430I.EXE
Q. Can we install NWadmin32 without access to the tree schema (cant write to it).
A. You can install from the ZEN CD (select Custom) and it won't touch the Schema and the files. Every time you start NWadmin it will provide an error message, but you can just ignore this.
Q. "Dead" 4.11 server in tree it has a partition replicated on it. Would like to remove it from the tree. (Dead = 1.2 Million DS repair errors) NDS manager won't communicate with the server and DSRepair produced an error log that exceded the SYS volume size.
A. DSMANAGER, Remove replica (this is telling other servers it is not there any more). Let NDS settle. Then remove the objects from the NDS, and again let NDS settle. Turn up the verbosity of DSTrace during this to monitor the updates (SET DSTRACE=all F's). Check the other replica's so that they no longer see it. (Note that we are not trying to remove the partition, just the replica).
MS Questions to MS representative (a stranger in a strange land ...)
Q. Is there a way of duplication a printer set up, and a DUN set up to copy to other machines under 95?
A. No as there are file and registry entries. There are imaging tools (which will copy entire machine), but MS does not condone this. There is a DUN copying tool (DUN Magic @WWW.DOWNLOAD.COM) and this will allow you to save the settings on a machine and then load them on another. Note the target machine must already have DUN client on the other machine.
NOTE: ZEN could easily roll out the printers for you !
ZEN Note: DO NOT ROLL OUT A SERVICE PACK WITH ZEN. Each install is a smart install and is tailored to the particular machine and config that it is installing to.
Q. Any tools to fix Office (ie. Word, Excel, etc. )documents that are corrupted.
A. Look on TechNet. Consider the machine that this is happening on. What is environmentally specific. Also turn on Make Backup copy, and set it with Zen or Policy.
Q. NT server with Notes 4 5.2. An MTA to SMTP. Sometimes the Notes apps locks up and it seems the port Notes is locked. NT is still OK. Arcserve 6 is running as well. Running over IP.
A. MS suggestion to use another protocol to a local workstation as a test. Check event logs to see what is happening there. Use Network Monitoring Agent to sniff the wire. Ping the specific Notes port.
Q. NT 4 SP3, running Routing & RAS (+ fix), DUN connections occasionally freeze. Load RAS Load fix. Works for another week. Then same thing again. Other modem types dont help. Full power down doesn't help.
A. Check event log, Look for hot fixes, other server works fine, modem port drivers, Serial port drivers.
