Melbourne Novell Users Group - Q&A
MNUG's September 1998 Q&A
Transcript

Q. Netware 4.11 user is logged in only once but the user name is showing up twice.

A. Could be a client reconnect feature. If the user shuts down the workstation and then logs in to another workstation, it might result in the problem.

One fix is the remapadr with the user address in front has fixed this for other administrators. This is available on the Novell web site and can be run in a DOS box.

Q. Bad IPX packet detected on the Managewise console, and then when the node address is searched out in Managewise, the node cannot be found. The problem stops by itself. Happens on Thursday morning. Managewise lists it as an unknown packet type. Lanalyser can't determine that any errors are occuring at that time.

A. This might be a router or a hub. Nlist /b might help, as it pulls the information off the wire. Look at the DHCP server and see if the node is listed there.

Q. Netware client update (NT) from 4.11a to 4.30 (ZENworks), allows users to edit login scripts, and disables the autologin.

A. The policy can fix the login script issues and the autologin can be set in the registry.

Q. Installing Border Manager on Compaq 9GB HDD, 2.5GB SYS, 6GB for CACHE VOL, with DNS to be installed soon. What is the overhead in terms of the HOSTS DB on the SYS Vol and RAM (192 Mb planned).

A. There should be no major problems in terms of the DNS overhead, as DNS is not a box intensive application for CPU RAM and HDD space.

Q. Compaq proliant 5000 256 MB RAM with TokenRing, once a week there are cache errors as well as Time Synch erroring out on occasion.

A. Possible the LAN card.

Q. 4 Macs on a Token Ring Network, trying to print to the server that has ATPS services and this passes on to a Biery print server attached to a high end colour printer. Data is definitely being sent as PostScript job. PC clients can print OK. Macs have problems printing to other printers on the network as well.

A. Novell outsourced all of its Apple support. Ensure that Mac Apps are sending the PPD files for each job. Log a call to Novell.

Q. Win95a (7.0) and Win95B (7.10) and Win98 (7.10 as well). Booting DOS will return different COMMAND versions so is this an issue on the network, given that COMMAND.COM runs from the network...

A. If Ghosting the systems to the same OS, all the comspec isses will be irrelevant. Changing the COMSPEC variable should help but the path order will have to be changed as well.

Q. VREPAIR fixed a problem. Should it be run on a regular basis or only when problems occur.

A. Novell: Theoretically it doesn't matter. With NSS it shouldn't be an issue.

Q. Intranetware for Small Business install, how do you turn off the Compression setting in the auto install.

A. There is a text field that can be updated to select components for install (or not). - Check install.cfg but it might be a similar file name.

Q. A known problem with the ATI drivers that ship with Compaq systems. WUSER causes problems with it.

A. There is an update from ATITECH.COM web site.

Q. New NWadmin that comes with Zen, requires a few different versions of nwadmin to ensure that all the different snap ins work properly.

A. Admitted by Novell. NWadmin 32 requires a SNAPIN dir, that is not supported by all apps. Novell is working on it and Netware 5 will solve most problems. One problem is that different product teams and different vendors are writing for Console one and there are competing priorities. This should be resolved bit by bit in time.

Q. Concerns over MIME attachments ... ?

A. One solution would be to install a third party product such as MiMe Sweeper, although this might require an NT box on the network.
